When I clean my pistols, I apply Hoppes #9 to soften up the residue. Then I scrub it all with a toothbrush. A lot of it drips or falls into the cracks and area that I can't reach with a Q-tip. I don't want to leave that all there because then all I did was move the residue from one area to another. What do you use to clean your with and how?

As form cleaning the frame, I do a simular method to what you did with Q Tip, But I use a lot of solvent on a soft, used tooth brush! That allows me to get all the crud off the parts, springs and small items and not screw anything inside up? If it's real Bad, I'll spray it with Carbaror Cleaner or gun scrubber and repeat it! If it worked in the Sands or Iraq and Afganistan, it should work for you? Just my -.02 cent,s your results might varry?


Remember the idea is to clean out the gunk, not over oil or grease it so that the sand and grit mess it up worse, right?

I once used WD-40 to clean with but have not in a while, never had any trouble with it.

That is the best way. WD-40 and air compressor.

I use bore cleaner in the bore. I use a very light spray of Remoil or Breakfree in aerosol to clean the frame. I usually wipe it down with a shop cloth or old teeshirt. I use Qtips for hard to reach places and often canned air to spray any excess off (I don't have a compressor.)

I use Hoppes #9. Use a tooth brush, acid brush or whatever fits. Rinse it off under a HOT water faucet. Use compressed air to dry it.

Generic carburetor cleaner ($3/large can) - use lots...

Be careful with the carb cleaner. It can melt some plastic parts. At best it will leave the plastic parts with a white color because it disolves any oily coating. I have used carb cleaner but do so only in the driveway as it will leave nasty stains on the kitchen floor and melt the linoleum. be sure to reoil as it strips ALL the oil off parts.
