What he said.
A 9mm will be enough to have a ball with and not enough to kick you back. Before long you will have that 1911 .45 itch going on, good luck and have fun.
+1 for the Dad.

At 12 yo, I assembled a .69 caliber brown bess. It's like a flash bomb with recoil/kick when fired. When you shoot, relax, let the breath out, hold the grip firm, focus on that front sight and pow your round will find the center. Congratulations & thank your father!

It would be weird if you didn't like some of the recoil...LOL That is just one of the reasons I love a .45. The .40 is a little snappy but is very manageable, the .38 is a great round also.
I think it is great that you are learning to shoot responsibly at the right age, I hope this is a good Father/son habit that will be some of your best memories latter on in life.

I prefer shooting a .380 over a 9 mm, personally. And yes, I do enjoy the recoil, too. I have to see someone shoot a gun I'm not familiar with first but I love to shoot a gun with a lot of kick.
I'm glad you're having fun with your Dad.

Yup, full sized pistols are more fun for me. Try a revolver, preferably in .38 special.
