getting first gun

I've been looking into the river sr9 and s&w sd9 for me and my wife's first guns. Anyone's experiences on these too weapons would be greatly appreciated. We both have fairly small hands and we be using them mostly for target shooting and home defense.

I've only shot the Ruger SR9, it is a great gun and I'd recommend it for a first handgun.

I suggest you visit your local range if they have rental guns and find those guns or as close as you can to those guns to test out. If not then at least visit your local arms shop and feel out the gun in person. If it feels good in your hand it will be easier to shoot if you don't constantly have to worry about your grip. Your gun should fit you like a glove! :D

Either gun will serve you well. Any of the major manufacturers will do well. Go play with as many as you can get your hands on and pick what feels best.

Gun choice is mostly about how it feels to you.

Good advice. Also, see if there is a gun show in your neck of the woods. It's a great chance to try on many different models. Plus, you see other goodies like; holsters, extra mags, defense ammo, lasers, targets, cleaning supplies, etc. And most importantly, you can meet a lot of cool & knowledgable people who love the 2nd amendment.

I owned a River SR9 (:o) for awhile & liked it but didn't love it-
However I've had a SR9C for about 2 yrs & its a keeper
