Default In a budget?

You have many options, even if if have only a tight budget...
First you have to decide...
Is for home defense? I will carry?
Next question.... Pistol or Revolver?

Some pistols on the net:
S&W Sigma 9mm $349 (There's a Allied Forces version for $364)
S&W Sigma .40S&W $349 (There's a Allied Forces version for $364, and if you don't mind the O.D green frame is yours for $328)
Taurus 24/7 .40S&W in SS for $382 and the blued version for $366
The Taurus PT92 Inox 9mm (wich is a "improved" Beretta 92FS/M9 Clone) for $444 and the Taurus PT99 .Inox 40S&W (wich is a "improved" Beretta 96 Clone) for $437

You should look around in your local shop.... Ruger P95, Ruger SR9, Bersa Thunder (not just the Thunder 380 but the full size of Bersa Thunder)

If you want a revolver:
Taurus 731 Ultra-Lite 2" .327FedMag (.32Magnum) for $327
Taurus 85 Ultra-Lite 2" .38spl (+P rated) for $319 there is a steel frame 3" version for $331
Charter Arms Undercover 2" .38spl (+P rated) for $324
Rossi 851 4" 38spl (+P rated)for just $284

Anyway is up to you, what do you feel comfortable to shot and what fits in your budget.

The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that, my dear friend, is the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.

I agree with Hunter Joe on the importance of gun fitting you and with clay 454 on double action revolvers especially if you are a novice shooter, I believe that under stress it should be very difficult to find out why tour pistol is not shooting..(safety on?,no bullet in chamber?both?etc),problems you want have with a revolver, of course you'll have less bullets but I think 6 are better than more if you have a jam...
