I havn't shot an XDm yet but the XD9 has a bit smoother and lil bit longer trigger pull than the M&P .40 IMO. The M&P fits in my hand better though and I like the look of it better than the XD... + ambi controls on M&P!

I love XDs (I have it in .45acp). That being said my friend just got an M&P .40 and loves it.

Why the 40, and not the 45?

Never shot a 1911 chambered in .45 ACP?

Before you make a final decision you really need to look at a 3" or 4.25" 1911.

Colt Defender 3"

Colt New Agent 3"

Colt Light Weight Commander 4.25"

.45 ACP too hot?

Do it right the first time and buy a good 1911.

Larger capacity with similar balistics and lighter recoil. Although capacity isn't an issue here in MA .

I asked my firearms instructor his opinion on what I should get for my first gun. He was currently in the process of choosing a new firearm for his department at the time, and was pretty sold on the M&P 40. I figured the guy knew what he was talking about and if a gun is good enough for police to use, its good enough for me.

I'm saving the 45 caliber for when I a 1911.
