I believe that this topic has been covered in the 1911 section.

I don't know if there is an advantage of one over the other. What little I've read about them is that it depends on the manufacturer. Seems S&W worked out the kinks & external extractors work well for them. Kimber tried them, was unsuccessful & went back to internal ones. All my 1911s, including a Kimber, have internal & all my Bersas have external & no problems with any of them, other than a couple of my 1911s needed adjustment.

Internal extractors have a little more gripping power for removing sticky or out of spec cases. If a chamber is dirty or the case decides to stick external extractors can esily pop off the rim.

In the case of 1911 the extractor was designed as an internal one to meet certain criteria and be reliable under even the dirtiest battlefield condition. JMB knew what he was doing.
