Really loved my friends 1911 I got to shoot this past weekend. Loved the feel and the weight of it and I'm a smaller guy (5'9"), so the thinner grip felt amazing. Thought the gun actually felt like much less recoil than the polymer 9 mm's I have shot. Am really interested in the heavier steel CZ. Have never held one but it appears to me that the grip is larger than the typical 1911 type stock grip. Really love the look of the CZ in 45 but it says the grip is even larger than the standard CZ 75. Anybody have thoughts on this? I can handle a little bigger than the slim 1911 grip but would like to stay as small as possible. Should I stay away from CZ? I don't remember my local gun store having any cz's so holding could be tough.

If your local gun store doesn't have them, check on line for gun shows in the area, and go 'browse' there, giving the old 'grip test'. If it doesn't feel good in your hand when you're NOT shooting it, it's not going to get any better when you do.

It sounds as if you want a metal framed gun, but what caliber do you prefer? If you want a 45acp, CZ's model 97 (double stack) will be a monster sized grip. I get the impression that won't suffice.

From what I'm hearing, you should primarily focus on a 1911 if you want a 45acp. A Sig P220 is the other reasonable option.

If you want a 9mm/40sw, consider CZ 75 models, Browning Hi-Power, Sig P228/229, or the very slim Sig P239.
