Compact .45?
My very generous father is getting his winter bonus in a couple of months, and he's decided to donate it to rebuilding my little arsenal. :D

I've got three niches to fill: shotgun, .357 wheelgun and compact .45. I've got the first two sort of figured out, but I'm not sure about the .45.

My first instinct is to go with a 1911 Commander. I'm not looking for a super small gun, just something slim and light. I loved my double stack Para but it wasn't easy to carry around. So I guess I want to focus on single stacks. The SIG 220 is another strong contender. I'm also considering an M&P since I've got it in 9mm and like it. Plus it's cheaper than a 1911 (my local gunshop has a pristine Colt Commander) and the SIG.

I'm open to suggestions...

Lots of options for you to consider for sure. While I love 1911s to shoot, I've never been a real fan of carrying them. I did carry my Commander at times during the winter but even the 4 inch guns get rather heavy by the end of the day. This being said - every collection NEEDs a 1911...

M&P 45 compact is great--I like it with the manual safety, but that's just my personal opinion. If he wants to be really generous, the HK USP 45c or HK45c are tremendous--but pricey.

Well, if you like the Paras, I just got a single stack shorty- a LDA C-7/45- and I like it.

The 220 is an excellent pistol. One of my friends, a long time LEO carries one and swears by it. He's also a Sig armorer, so he knows his stuff.

That said, my recommendation would be a Dan Wesson Commander Bobtail or CBOB as they're called. I had one and it was awesome. Next choice would be the Colt Combat Commander.

Of the three, either 1911 would be my choice depending on budget.

I was recently tempted to pick up a P220 Carry from a fella on the Sig forum. The price was right and the Carry model is much more compact than a full-sized P220 - which is a large gun. Turned out the fella lived on the other side of the state so I passed - but I was intrigued...

That's the one. Mine was stainless. I miss it terribly. :(

I'm leaning towards a 1911 Commander. My choices might be a bit limited over here and I probably will have to go for a used one, since most of the 1911s imported into the country are full size models (our carry laws are so restrictive that gun shops don't stock many compact guns).

Since they are hard to come by, I might start looking now and if I find one I'll try to put a down pament on it, or put it in layaway. When my dad get's his bonus in mid July I can get my money back.

If I can't find a nice 1911, I'll go with the Sig. I've been itching to try out that brand for a while now. I handled it at a gun shop and it fit my hand like a glove.
