DANG!! In my opinion, this is one of the most serious offense of a gun owner. The first thing one should do when picking up a gun is to check to see if it's loaded. Drop the mag, rack the slide, look in the chamber. With a revolver, open the cylinder and check each chamber.
I find nothing "cute" or funny about your wife's irresponsible behaviour.

Couldn't say it any better, hunter/firearm safety rule number 1 class? .... Treat every firearm as if it is loaded, and don't put your finger on the trigger unless your ready to shoot at a safe target, or bad guy I suppose in some circumstances. Not through your front door into your neighbors house....
