I have a Sig Sauer p220 which I absolutely love. I also have a glock 19, which I love, but prefer the trigger, steel construction, and ergonomics of a Sig Sauer.

Can anyone vouch for the new p228R? I would like to use it for high speed, combat competition, and then mount a light on it and keep it under my bed for home protection.

I assume it is just as good as the older p228. Also wikipedia mentions that you can use p226 magazines in the p228. I assume that's true? Would I be better off with a full sized p226 or even a p229?

I have an older P228 and it's about the perfect 9mm, not to big and not to small. Many Sig snobs will talk down about the newer guns but I own (and have owned) both older German made guns as well as the newer models and have seen no real difference with them. While I have a P226 and a P228 I've never tried exchanging the mags so I don't know if they work. (Not at home to check either) My P226 is a newer railed model and it's just as good a shooter as the old German-made P226 I owned previously - no reason to think the P228R would be any different.

As far as using it for competition, I see no reason it wouldn't do just fine. I've used my P229 in competition before and it performed just fine. BTW, the classic Sigs are not all steel, they use alloy frames...

I've not owned or shot a Sig that let me down. I have a 226 and 229 that will do their part when you do yours. I'll agree with NGIB about quality through the ages. I've had older ones and newer ones and there's no real difference in how they shoot.
..And yeah..Alloy frames. But they sure are tough.

I have to agree with all of you about the quaility of Sig pistols. I own several of them including the P228, it was my daily carry gun for over 12 yrs. As far as the new P228R I would love to get one. By the way the P226 mags do work in the P228. I used the 20rd mag on my pistol for home defense.

As long as the new Sigs are just as good as the older ones, I think I'm gonna get a 228R eventually.

It will be the little brother to my 220.

The one thing that I can not get over is the difference in price from when I purchased my Sigs. They have almost doubled.
