So why not a 9mm 1911?? STI Spartan $600ish. STI Trojan or Springfield stainless loaded around $1000.
RIA 9mm down around $400.
Yeah but if I go 9mm I'd still like to gain advantage of higher capacity and double stack 1911s are more expensive. I really don't want to spend more than $600 on it, but I'll keep an eye on the Trojan, I might change my mind
Remember this when you support the labeling and tracking of people and the complete digital takeover of commerce:

Everybody is making good suggestions. I am partial to xd/xdm (wifey has 1 of each and I have an xdv10). You need to get all your choices laid out on a counter and pick the one that is most comfortable for YOU, and shoot them if possible. Everybody's hands are built different. What may fit me perfectly might feel like a club to you. Since you do like the 1911 though, there are several good ones out there

XD 9mm service.
First pistol I've ever purchased and couldn't be happier. I've put 1200+ rounds with only one problem (I didn't clean it before I took it to the range for the first time). After a couple trips to the range I took a buddy with me to the range and he decided he wanted a handgun also. He bought a M&P. Great gun also. He likes the trigger on the XD better as do I. Don't get me wrong the M&P is a great pistol but I love my XD. Both are accurate out of the box. Either one is an excellent choice. See which one fits your hands better as stated above.
