So I'm kind of new to shooting pistols and my spread is awful. I would say I'm adequate with a rifle but with pistols not at all. Are their any pointers or tips I should pay attention to so that I can improve my accuracy and consistency?

First thing would be take a class from a certified instructor. This is true for any of the adventure sports (things people do for fun that are dangerous too).
He/she would then teach you many new things, how to stand, how to hold the handgun (pistol or revolver), trigger pull, breathing, natural sight picture, rate of accurate fire, rapid fire, sighting on the target and front sight blade, and holding off for drift adjustment.
After you get set properly with your stance, they will chalk your footprints. So bring some chalk with you and try it yourself.
The problem is that anything you try on your own is only going to develop bad habits.
Therefore the best thing is to find a certified instructor right away.

Start with practicing obtaining proper sight picture, controlling your breathing, and consistant trigger squeeze. Practice ALOT,you will get better
And always remember safety first

If there is not a trainer in the area that the range can recommend:
Go to the range on a busy day. Watch the people. You can see that some are great shots, while other people are not.
Those that are great shots normally are willing to share their secrets for free to anyone with an open mind and no preconceived ideas.
Those that are not great shots normally will have a smart aleck aura and think they know all about shooting.
Now, decide who you are willing to ask for assistance.

Also, at what distance are you setting your target? Start with the target about 7 yards away. It might only frustrate you if you are setting your target at 25 or 50 yards to start with.

when it comes to pistol shooting the fundamentals are the same. breath control, trigger squeeze, correct sight picture, correct sight alingment, and proper stance/grip.
now pistols are slightly more difffacult due to several factors, only 2 contact points vs 3 with a rifle. a shorter sight radius than that of a rifle. so the fundamentals are that much more important to maintain, and focus on while shooting. practice practice practice. even try dry firing when you arent at the range. it will help you to learn good techniques while not costing tons in ammo.
go ahead and start with the target at 7 to 10 yards. once you become good at this distance. move it to 12 or 15 yards... and so on.
good luck, happy shooting

Dont shoot it like a rifle, keep both eyes open. Of course you may know that already.
