Hornady Critical Defense, Winchester Ranger or any high quality JHP ammo will serve you well. Key to a good SD ammo is reliabilty and consistent expansion under diverse conditions.
Best to avoid any bargain basement ammo but no need to spend top dollar for "self defense" labeled boxes. Just be sure that your particular gun feeds and shoots it reliably. |
I like Speer Gold Dot 230gr hollow points.

These are my sd/hd I cast my own bullets and reload they cost me about $.08 each. The main reason I don't use golden saber or hydrashock is that a 45acp really dose not have the velocity to really expand the bullet like the 9mm or .40 imho. I have shot several hp rounds into a bucket of sand and found them almost untouched. My soft round lead ball ammo just flattens the tip a bit on impact.
From what I know the hollow point was to make a bullets surface area larger so it can stop in and not blow through there by transfer its energy into the target (9mm will zip right through a human target thus taking its energy with it) a 45acp fmj in most cases will stop in about 6-10 inches of ballistics jell thus transferring 100% of its energy into the target. I would say save your money and carry fmj or just lead but that is just my opinion. |
For range or plinking, you cant beat the winchester whitebox 230g fmj. The walmart here has the 100rd box for $35.00
