I would be interested in hearing the complaints about the XD. My .40 is a XD40SC, and I enjoy it way more than I thought I would.
CZ family is worth a look. I love my 75BD, but there are a number of others worth a look as well.
EAA or maybe a Baby Eagle might do. They are CZ...derived
Stoeger Cougar is worth a look. It may end up being my next .40. A lot of gun for the money. Just because he has a $600 limit doesn't mean he needs to spend it all.
FN makes some nice hardware as well in the required price point.

By the way, I purchased my 2-tone (SS/black) XDm .40 for less than $600 here.

Springfield Armory

Note that it will go over after shipping and FFL fees but $600 should be sufficient for all black delivered (depending on your FFL fees).

I'd suggest he look at 3 .40 cal guns.

CZ / Sig Sauer / EAA.

Here's my CZ in 9mm (40 looks the same)

Sig Sauer P229

EAA Witness in Wonder Finish

All three guns are tack drivers to shoot.

Their feel is very similar and the CZ & EAA Witness cost less than $500.

The Sig was higher, but can be found used for $500.

All 3 are fine guns.

I wanted a 40 to fill that niche in my collection and Buds has some S&W P990LE (made by Walther) trade-ins for $320 right now. The one I got was in probably 95% condition and came with a third mag. Even with the extra high FFL fee (my local shop hates Buds with a passion, but at least now I know) I'm still under $400 for a gun that is spectacularly accurate and slimmer than the XD series. It's buying a used gun sight-unseen but just another idea. I very much like mine.

Look at the S&W M&P and the FNP both fit the need and both are far different pistols. I expect one of the two will fit the need.

I just got a text from him.
he says, "The winner is the FNP .40"

So, looking that up, does anybody know anything about that gun?

FNP-40, DA/SA, USG

the website doesn't give an MSRP.
checking bud's it seems like he might be able to get one for $500 ish.

Discount Guns for Sale - Buds Gun Shop

Please let me know if i should steer him away or toward this purchase.

Your feedback has been priceless.
