If a Glock .23 with 40s&w is good enough to be my duty weapon. To include taking on active shooters using god knows what against me. Then I would say its good enough for home defense.

one thing for sure, a shot intruder isn't going to know what round he was shot with, he will just know that he is shot and (this being the semi-auto handgun forum) multiple times is what they would get from me

Just shoot a couple of boxes of whatever you choose to make sure they feed with no issues. Now that I am up here, I use nothing but softpoints.

Where does it say a brand, weight, or whether it was +p+. All I see is it appeared to be a .38 caliber Jhp. Doesn't matter either way since the bg is dead. If I use .38s in my ruger wheel gun, it's hornady critical defense. Same goes for .357 mag. Although, I DO keep some Remington golden saber +p sitting around.

And just think of the damage if they had used a 158 grain hollowpoint

Speer Gold Dot is reputed to be good ammo. The main thing is to have the ammo cycle the gun properly and hit the target. Don't panic and resort to the "spray-n-pray" method, take a half second longer and aim your shot(s). The old-time successful gunslingers, such as Hickock were not the fastest to draw and fire, but remained calm, took their time and aimed their shots while the BG's were firing shot after shot and missing.
I carry the gold dot hollow points in my 44 mag. no lack of penetration there. I have a 40 for my concealed gun and use FMJ in it. The Berretta had feed issues with the big hollow point. As noted by others as long as the ammo fires and feeds it will do the job! Bang every time you pull the trigger is way more important that a few percentage points in terminal ballistics.

i have no doubts in any caliber of pistol i own, even the 22's. i tend to have more confidence in my abilities rather than material things. if the only pistol i owned was a 380 auto, and that's what i had to depend upon to defend myself with, then i would learn how to be deadly accurate with it and learn it's limitations and work within those limitations.

Federal 110gr 38 +P+ was the issued ammo at the time. We could only carry issued ammo no exceptions.

Here is a couple pages on ballistics results - just FYI.

http://www.ar15.com/ammo/project/Self_Defense_Ammo_FAQ/

http://www.hornady.com/ballistics-resource/terminal

This page scrolls horizontally and shows mushroom resutls of soft tip ammo.

Lots of detailed reading
