I'd vote for the .40....but that's just me.

.40 would be good. A 45 ACP would be the better. Stopping power.

rimfire ammunition is not reliable enough for every day self defense use. a 22 lr or wmr or any rimfire if its all you got thats one thing but to plan ahead of time as your main dfnsive firearm thats not a wise choice.

.22 Magnum CAN kill you- but absent a shot that penetrates the brain, or cuts the spinal cord, it will not STOP you.

Yes, the bad guy bled to death- 10 minutes after he beat YOU to death. At which time, what happens to him is now irrelevant to you.

As much as I enjoy my .22s for target and small game, the ONLY .22 I would rely on for self defense was called the American 180.

am180-1.jpg

.22LR, 177 rd magazine, full auto at 1200 rounds per minute.

If i had to choose between the 2 for self defense 40 all day long! The 40 will definately have a better chance at stopping a bad guy quicker in my opinion. And in a self defense situation every second counts

40 hands down.

22mag will typically produce around 140 ft/lbs of energy.

40 S&W will typically produce around 470 ft/lbs of energy.

From published data on "one shot stop" percentage-

.22 WMR, 40%

.40 S&W- 89%-94%
