My old .45 auto is a gov't job made from various parts on Parris Island in the 60's, a friend of mine took it on 2 tours down South.Sold it to me in the 70's All I have ever needed to fix on it was the recoil spring and replaced the collet. Not a super tack driver, but will shoot in the crappiest conditions.
I had a Series 70 Colt,sold it when times got hard, then a Safari Arms, I believe,, it wasn't very reliable. The old warhorse has never let me down.
Maybe one of these days I will get a tricked out 1911, but for now old Sam will do nicely.

Rock Island is a well made 1911.and tighter than a colt.sells for around $350
I have 3 1911s.only one colt.and it has been adjusted.
I have not figured how colt operates as they closed and opened.as onother name.noricos were better made than colts but you can only find used ones.
The rest are well made but pricy.

I've been looking at 1911's for a while now and due to price point I'm looking at the Rock Island and Springfield. Both have good reputations and half the price of Colts.

Not sure these statements should be construed as facts as what's "best" or "better" is subjective. I'm certainly not aware of Colt closing and reopening under a different name.

I own a Norinco and a Colt and I wouldn't say the Norinco is "better made" than the Colt by any stretch of the imagination. It's true that Norinco's haven't been imported to the US from China since the early 90s (thank Bill Clinton) so only used ones are available here. Not trying to be argumentative here, just helping separate facts from opinions...

OK The Rock Island is a decent 1911 but tighter than a colt what colt have you shot a military version that has been road hard and put up wet for the last 50 some years?

What again please inform me. I have never heard of this happening. Seeing as COLT is still in business under the COLT name.

OK Sorry but what the hell are you smoking? Why some prefer the Norinco frame because it is forged and not investment cast that is about it. Other than that they were not that well made. Customer service was top notch as well.

What pray tell do you mean bu pricey. If you mean my Kimber Custom II is pricey at $750 then it is. I got more features on my kimber than on any other pistol at the time I purchased it in the price range of my custom II.

The 1911 can be had from the $350 basement model with the basic GI look. Up to the $2000 to $5000 custom guns like Wilson Combat, Nighthawk Custom.
