10 mm LITE
Wouldn't it be a good idea that ammo makers would sell 10 mm LITE bullets (The FBI load wich performance was reproduced by the 40 S & W caliber) , so that way you could buy 10 mm pistols and use this powered down and full power loads the same way you could use 38 special cartridges in a 357 magnum revolver?
This way you could shoot 10 mm or 40 s & w reduced recoil and power like rounds off the same gun
Or is this being done already?

The current 10mm loads are not like the original Norma loads. They have been downloaded some already.
When I was competing with the 10mm, I loaded the 180gr SWC to shoot approx 1000' per second. This gave me a power factor of 180 for IPSC. Accuracy was great, recoil was manageable.
Federal 180FMJ has a reported velocity of 1030 FPS.
Use the IPSC power factor formula of (bullet weight) X (FPS) / 1000 = (PF)
Using the Federal .45ACP 230gr bullet X 890 fps / 1000 = a Power Factor of 204.7
Using the Federal 10mm 180gr FMJ X 1030 FPS / 1000 = a Power Factor of 185.4

But I bet 10 mm commercial ammo hasn't been been downloaded that much.
If the data I'm reading is not wrong a 180 g 10 mm bullet will travel at 1350 ft/s against the 1050 ft/s from a .40 S & W, with a 10 mm cartridge loaded to achieve .40 S & W performance ,one could have the best of both worlds and choose the load according to one's need. I wonder if recoil springs in a 10 mm pistol is too hard for a lighter load to move though.

Using my source, there are other loads that do exceed the 1030 FPS.
I was showing the OP that there are loads out there that could be considered "lite".
Even the Blazer 180gr 10mm is faster than the stated 1030 FPS from Federal.

Actually, most commercial 10mm ammo is quite a bit under powered...
compared to the original loads by Norma. If memory serves me correctly, the original load from Norma was a 200 grain bullet at 1300fps from a five in barrel. The hottest current commercial load that I am aware of is the Winchester Silvertip, a 175 grain bullet at an advertised 1275fps. Many, if not most, are well below this.
Just doing some quick searching found this web site. Check it out...

There are a few loadings from companies such as Double Tap and Buffalo bore that are true powerhouses, but many loads barely outperform 40 S&W by any appreciable degree.

Danf ,my bad when I read your first reply, so there are already 10 mm rounds that travel at 40 speed ranges , like the Federal you used at 1030 ft/s , so as far as you know you are indeed shooting a "LITE " load, this could be the answer for my original post, having a 10 mm round with the mild recoil of the 40 for SD for example and the possibility of using hotter full load rounds for hunting .

So I guess it kind of makes sense to buy a 10 mm pistol instead of a .40 since you have 10 mm rounds that behave pretty much as a .40 one.
I always thought that any 10 mm was way more powerful than any 40 but it seems I was wrong. Thanks

ehh......
40 WILL NEVER be able to attain what a 10mm will, neither will 45 ACP.
My IDPA loads in 10mm are 155gr tmj running about 840 fps(130 power factor). Theyre pu$$ycats compared to 40, even some 9mm.
But I can go the otherway and make a 180gr run about 1200fps (215 power factor) and make 40 look like a 22.
its the perfect reloaders round.

I have one of the original test Pistols for the FBI. I run it w/ 175..180gr all the time. Cast lead are cheap to load. They hum pretty good w/ a 5" barrel.

Just look for 10mm ammo labled "subsonic". That IS the 10mm lite you are referring to. Winchester has a 180 grain subsonic and a 175 grain supersonic (1290fps).
