BACK to the original post- it IS a crying shame. I know of places (NYC and elsewhere) that you can get killed for a box of Lucky Charms, much less $800.
There WAS a really cheesy movie in the 80's called Swamp Thing. Classic line- Adrienne Barbeau is with a little black kid in his Grandma's country store- being pursued by the bad guys. She asks "Does your Grandma have a gun here?". Little kid looks at her, says" What kind of a store do you think this is? Of COURSE we got a gun!"
As long as you have people that feel THEY have a right to what YOU have, gun control laws will do nothing but put the elderly, weak and small at the mercies of the young, strong and vicious.
IMHO, shoot him, put his head on a pike outside the store as a warning to others, and the Merchant's Association should give him a small cash award and a plaque. That would be much more effective at reducing violent crime than the chalk that homicide detectives use to outline the position of bodies.
