The tests on .410 buck warrant a little more investigation, but that's another thread. I was kinda excited about the Judge, but the .410 round isn't as impressive as I had hoped.

The point is that .410 birdshot is just that. I agree that the buckshot would be better. Gun fires the .45 LC which you can get self-defense rounds. One can also get a .410 slug in hollow point expander. I'd like to see that round tested.

Maybe some of those crazy flechette rounds you see at the gunshows.

I have to disagree about birdshot being ineffective. Now when fired from the Judge, I assume it's true UNLESS being fired from point blank range. I've had the little derringers in .410/.45colt and up to 6 feet away, it's BAD news for the target-no matter what it is. The key is being close enough for it to be effective. Remember you're shooting something which is rifled, that means the shot charge is donut shaped and spreading FAST! My personal home defense 12 gauge has the 1st 2 rounds loaded with 2 3/4" magnum high brass #4 shot. I HAVE tested this gun/load combo extensively and found that at close enough range, the right birdshot load is every bit as effective as buckshot. There IS a huge difference between 12 gauge and .410, however at ranges of 3-6', and with #4 high brass, I sure wouldn't want someone shooting at ME with 1.

I feel like we're hijacking the thread, but what is the purpose of .410 Buck in the first place? Did anyone hunt deer with a .410, ever? Does anything chambered in .410, other than the derringer (which I'll assume is more of a back up), have a practical SD application?

I don't know the original purpose but I picked up a 410 super cheap and my wife wont shoot my 12 or 16's so when she's home alone I leave 3" 000 in the 410. May not be ideal but I don't doubt that it would drop a man. That's the only real practical use I have for it, slugs included.

.410 Buckshot loads is a good alternative for someone that doesn't want the bulk and muzzle blast/recoil of a 12 gauge.

I think the Taurus Judge is a good idea as a defensive weapon, and is a good example of how the Taurus company is pretty decent.

Here in Ohio, the .410 shotgun is usually the first gun for the 1st kill of many youth hunters. High powered rifles are illegal in Ohio for taking deer.
