Personally I would steer clear of an AR for my first line of defense in the house. I'm kit sure your living situation, but my house has four kids a dog and a cat. Plus I live in Las Vegas where you can reach out of your window and touch the neighbors house. I'd worry about over penetration.

I keep a SIG SP 2022 in a 9mm with Speer gold dot hollow points in a biometric safe on my night stand.

Hopefully the unmistakable sound that comes before pulling the trigger is enough to get my point across.

Hmm...quick access to multiple pistols, primarily an XDm45 and BHP. And there's always a loaded 12ga tucked in the corner.

But honestly, the first gun I'd grab for home defense is a little bit of an oddball: my Kel-Tec Sub2000. It's a featherweight 9mm carbine with a capacity of 17 to 33 rounds. Super reliable, fast, accurate at all distances within 100yds, and 9mm from a 16" barrel hits like a medium 357mag pistol. This is just a really nifty gun. It knocks down 4"-6" steel plates in rapid succession every single time at 25-50yds.

But when hoards of zombies or aliens come calling, the ARs come out.

Depends, I have bed time defense and around the house defense, utilizing different guns. My Beretta Jetfire 25 for around the home in my sweats and Firestars 45 and 9 for sleepy time under each side of pillow.

For years it was my 4-inch S&W 686 loaded with Glazers but now it's my Glock 21 loaded with Gold Dots or HSTs.

i have a couple of choices that i use, depending on the situation. if suprised, the Winchester Defender pump shotgun and if checking out something and need easy to manuever, then one of the 1911's in 45 i keep in a holster next to the bed.
