25yrds with a Glock 23 and 27. Both are pretty much the only handguns I shoot. If I need to tap anything further out then that I hope my AR is around....

When I first started with the Border Patrol, we used to qualify up to the 50 yard line shooting standing and kneeling. We carried the .357 at the time and we would shoot out further for practice.

I seldom practice anything other than at SD distances with my SD weapons. I would much rather expend my ammo and time maintaining and/or improving my SD skills. I do have pistols and rifles that are better used for distances beyond 50 yds.

The standard "Bullseye" competition is shot at 25 and 50 yards off hand. Black Powder Flint Lock pistol is shot at 25 and 50 yards. Some very small groups are turned in.

Chuck, do you do multiple assailants, shoot/no shoot, crowd shooting (innocents mixed with assailants) and stuff like that? I was just curious how far you took your SD training.

With a commander length 1911 up I shoot at a Do All hot box target at around 50 yds. My pocket guns It's 20-25 yds. The target is about 8"(?) cube.
Being the target moves around when hit I usually start it around 40-45 yds. and it will travel out from there. The Top Hat is a good one too but smaller. I want the Ground Ball. It looks like it would really move around...heh

The targets seem a little pricey but some of them are good for a couple thousand rounds. It's some seal sealing uber cool groovy stuff. Being my range is at home using stuff like this make for great shooting fun. They can take form a 22 to 50 cal round but HP ammo messes with them and they break down faster. What I like best about them is the target moves on each hit so you have to reacquire the target each time making it a little more trying than a paper target.

So yeah, smacking one of those at 50 would be harder than the 24" paper. So I'm pretty comfy saying I"m good at 50 on one of those.

Reading this reminded me I do have longer bbl pistols

It seems to have blown right out of my head but I have a scoped 44 mag that I would shoot at `as much as 100 yds. But It's a 9" bbl revolver too. My friend has been making a holster for it and has had my gun for a while so I kind of forgot about it being I have not shot it in a while. My used to be 22/45 now a 9" Tac Sol gun cna also shoot out like that but I have not shot any of the long bbl pistols in a while. I guess I need to change that. "Sorry dear I have ot practice today..No flea mkt" Think it'll work?

Actually if we are talking about any handgun we want, I have a Thompson Super Contender. It is a 7-30 Waters in a 14 inch barrel. It will throw a 120 grain bullet 2417 fps. It is of course scoped. I can shoot 2 inch groups at 100 yards with that bad boy. So if we are talking 24 in squared target? It will really reach out and touch something. I have not shot it past 100. But it would definately get out there.
