I am traveling to Germany and considered bringing my Glock 17. What would I need to do?

Change your mind, and stop considering it. Germany has very restrictive laws on possession of firearms, including a permit to possess, demonstrated NEED to possess and laws on importation and registration. Possession of an unlicensed firearm will extend your trip by 10 years.

If you are being assigned to Germany (permanently, not tdy, tad, or leave) as an active duty member, you have to register the firearm.

If by some chance you do take the firearm, you need an import form from the BATF to bring the firearm back to the US to show customs.

C3's advice should be heeded.

Why? Why would you even entertain such a thing!? No good could come from it...

Leave your gun at home. You are asking for trouble if you wish to take a firearm with you over there.

I am traveling to Germany in August. Possessing a firearm there as a private citizen is a real headache compared to what we are used to here.
