In addition to the four rules of gun safety, one habbit I've developed is whenever I first pick up a gun for anything other than shooting at the target, is to verify that's unloaded (whether I beleive it to be unloaded or not). If this is always the first thing you do, it makes the four rules of gun safety even a bit safer.
