Stoeger makes a pretty good pistol but I think I"d lean to the 357 if for no other reason the ability to use different ammo. Taurus has got a lot better over the last several years and I have seen some pretty nice ones the last couple years. I'm a HUGE fan of their PT1911.

For your use, I'd say the .357 would be the more appropriate choice. But I would hunt down a used S&W or Ruger. IMHO, the savings on the Taurus just don't seem worth it. That, and they aren't really the bargain they used to be. Yes, I own a working Taurus 85 UL. Hindsight being 20-20, I would have been better served/happier spending a bit more or finding a used alternative.
FWIW, Stoegers are a very good product. I've come close to buying one several times. I will likely end up with one eventually.
