If they issue Glock 22's, perhaps you could get a G23 or G19. I'm not sure why the G17 doesn't float your boat, though. I would bet the G22 is going to be the ticket, which means a G17 would be a fine trainer. Though, a G22 with a 9mm conversion barrel is a pretty great option, as well.
Not sure why he doesn't like the Glock?

Ok, you might want to sit down for this. Not everyone is a fan of Glock. I am one of them. Don't care for them. Shot a few and even owned 36 for a short time.

Many things not to Like about a Glock!! But if honest about facts and what's really important in a hand gun "Glocks are 2nd to none" if I'm betting on my life for something to work it's going to be a Glock!! This statement can be backed by the fact that Glocks are the choice of the majority of PD and PO!

The MOST important part of surviving/prevailing in a shootout is hit probability, PERIOD. (that said I am talking about using enough gun 9, 357, 40, 45 and having a reliable gun).
SO the gun which you shoot the best increases the probability of 'being the first with the most' and that is what it is ALL ABOUT!!!
I shoot in the high 90's with my S&W 9's and in the low 80's with the Glock 22's I have been issued. Which would be the better gun for ME to carry in harms way???????

Can officers carry extended mags? Maybe just on their person? That might end up being a life saving investment as well

All depends on each department's policy. At my agency we have to carry at least 2 extra, but we can carry as much as we want in addition with no specification on extended mags. I have one 14 rd extended mag in my 229 and three regular 12 rd reloads.

Possible but not probable. My M&P has a 17 rd mag. (Other than in my past military experience) I can not see the probability of me ever needing to have a magazine with more than 17 rounds for LEO duty. I have two more of them on my duty belt.
