In the summer, I often carry a Beretta 950 in .25ACP.

That was my "deep cover" or second back up while in LE.

I trust the 9 rounds of Hornady XTP in it, and my ability to place them where they need to be.

Not really given a context, or if we're talking purely diameter of the bullet or the entire loaded cartridge... but for medium range the .17 HMR is very capable.

That's .50 caliber. Both of these were launched from 2" snubbys, one Taurus and one S&W. Both were about 12 inches of penetration in water, from about 10 feet.

I once heard that if you shot someone with a .32, and if they found out about it, they'd be really pissed.

Amen. I carry, and use for home defense, 22lr pistols. Nonexistent recoil and easy to conceal and draw, without the problems of over-penetration, yeah. I trust my life not to any gun, but, rather, to my abilities to properly use one as well as other evasive/defensive techniques. Larger caliber can aid me in my efforts, but isn't at all necessary.

I would say that 9mm is the smallest round I have a fair amount of faith in. I'm happy with anything in the 9mm-.357-.40-.45 range.

Now, I will carry a .380 ACP or .38 Special but I don't trust them as much as I do the "first team" listed above. I would not willingly carry anything smaller (such as .22-.25-.32) for SD.

I carried a .22lr for a long time. I felt comfortable enough with it ... now I carry a charter pitbull .40S&W 5 shot revolver.
