In the summer, I often carry a Beretta 950 in .25ACP.

That was my "deep cover" or second back up while in LE.

I trust the 9 rounds of Hornady XTP in it, and my ability to place them where they need to be.

Not really given a context, or if we're talking purely diameter of the bullet or the entire loaded cartridge... but for medium range the .17 HMR is very capable.

Amen. I carry, and use for home defense, 22lr pistols. Nonexistent recoil and easy to conceal and draw, without the problems of over-penetration, yeah. I trust my life not to any gun, but, rather, to my abilities to properly use one as well as other evasive/defensive techniques. Larger caliber can aid me in my efforts, but isn't at all necessary.

I have one of these. Its a Titan .25 acp and I will use it if necessary but I carry a 1911 as my just in case.

I would say that 9mm is the smallest round I have a fair amount of faith in. I'm happy with anything in the 9mm-.357-.40-.45 range.

Now, I will carry a .380 ACP or .38 Special but I don't trust them as much as I do the "first team" listed above. I would not willingly carry anything smaller (such as .22-.25-.32) for SD.

I carried a .22lr for a long time. I felt comfortable enough with it ... now I carry a charter pitbull .40S&W 5 shot revolver.
