On your .380 vrs 9mm test, barrel length, spring tension and gun design will all affect bullet performance.
380s are generally straight blo back guns while 9mms tend to have delayed bloback. The delayed gun should push a bullet out at a higher velocity han a blowback gun if everything else is the same. A longer barrel should also create higher velocities.
A harder bullet will penetrate farther than a softer one as well.
Basically there are a gazillion different factors that determine how 2 different caliburs will perform in seemingly same circumstances.
Having said that though, we do know that heavy slow bullets outperform fast light bullets in killing people, with a handgun.
For all you naysayers, the .22Lr has killed more people in the US than all other caliburs combined!!!!
