Default Shooting distances

I read a lot of posts about shooting longish distances with handguns. In one recent post, a fella was sighting in a baby Glock at 25 yards. Maybe it's just me but I've never seen a need to worry about using a handgun farther than 10 yards or so. I rarely practice shooting any of mine over 10 yards and I generally shoot at 5-7 yards.

Now, if I was planning to hunt with a handgun I could see the need to practice at longer ranges. IMHO, handguns are basically defensive type weapons and if someone is 25 or more yards away - they aren't much of a threat to me. Do y'all shoot at longer range with your handguns?

I shoot at 10 and 20, but then again, I don't carry yet. I do okay at 10 yards, fairly consistent 1.5-2 inch groupings with factory sights, considering I've only been shooting for a couple months, but my 20-yard targets usually look like I'm using a shotgun. >.>

I practice at 7 to 15 yards.

I always feel like I'm cheating at 10 yards or less.

I usually do most of my shooting at 15-20 yards.

I enjoy longer distances, so I do a fair bit of shooting at 25 yards (maximum distance at my indoor range) or more (at the silhoutte range, etc.). Although it might not be essential for SD training, it sure is fun.

I usually warm up at 5 to 7 yards and then I shoot at 15. That's 45 feet.

At 45 feet, if there is a threat, I can make distance, E&E or otherwise counter-engage.

After all, the minute you pull that weapon, something is going to happen. And something involving the law, or a lawsuit, will most likely follow.

I do shoot at least a couple of mags through at about 19 or 20 yards, just to keep the skill set fresh, but I do not make a habit of trying to shoot mag after mag into a target at 25 yards.

Now, if we are shooting for fun and competition over who has to buy lunch afterwards, well, that is a whole 'nother story.

I usually shoot at around 20 yards or 50 yards. It's more because of the range than anything else. It would be nice to have a 5 yard and 10 yard target to shoot but the chance of getting hit with shrapnel goes up when your that close where I shoot.

I rarely shoot over 20 yds. I start at 5-7 and then move to 10-12. I have shot longer distances just to see, but for good practice, never. I have a friend who is new to hand guns, and I have a hard time getting him to understand the shorter engage distances. It has been a test of my patience, but he is starting to get the idea. He was upset that he rarely put one on paper at 20 yards with his new .357 snubbie....

Wow. That doesn't sound like fun to me. I can't even stand to shoot indoors.

I practice at 7-15 yards with semis and snubbies and around 25-35 yards for long barreled, big bore revolvers. (bears)
