S&W Model 27 question
Just wondering what the -# after the Model 27 indicates, such as a Model 27-2 or 27-9. I'm thinking it may indicate how old it is but not sure.

It's the revision or version of the model.

Model 20,21,22,23,24,25 (except 25-5) 26,27,28,29
-1 1960 Change to LH thread
-2 1961 Cylinder stop changed, hole in front of trigger guard eliminated
-3 1982 Eliminate cylinder counterbore (magnums only)
-4 2004 Thunder Ranch 44 Special, fixed sight
If you PM me the S/N I can tell you the year the gun was built.

The Dash marks on S&W frames denotes changes. The 27-1 was removing the the top screw in the side. The 27-2 was changing the thread pitch on the extractor rod. And on it goes. The problem with aging is frames were often used long after changes were completed. You will also note that serial numbers change from "S" to "N". I have a Mdl. 29 no dashs but has all the -2 changes with an"S" serial. The S&W serial number will give a more accurate age.

Thanks for clearing that up guys. The Model 27 is one fine gun.
