Heel magazine releases do make it easier to retain magazines.
i use my mark3 22/45 for practicing mag changes and fast shooting while staying on target. having the controls close to my centerfire firearms is a must for me.

i used to have a sig p220 with the heel clip release. carrying it ccw it would routinely eject the magazine/clip. it was a good gun but i traded it for a thumb/button release.

if your just shooting on the range at bullseye targets it really doesnt matter. but anything else heel release is too slow and do not retain mags reliably when holstered.
