Question about the operation of semi automatic handgun?
When you fire, how does the slide return to it's original position and not stay locked back because when you pull the slide back manually, It locks in place. Does it have something to do with the trigger being depressed?

The magazine follower, the plate at the bottom of the magazine that you push down when you load the bullets, will push up on a spring loaded catch mechanism after the last round is fed into the chamber. When the slide comes back after firing the last round, it is caught by the now raised catch mechanism, called the slide catch, and held open.

The slide should only lock back when you have an empty mag in the well or when you lock it back manually by holding the slide catch release to lock the slide. If it stays open after you rack the slide back to load a round in the chamber there is a problem with the gun.

Hey, First. How 'bout you go on over to the Introductions forum and tell us about yourself.

The slide stop lever only engages when there is a magazine inserted AND the magazine is empty. Some people use an empty mag to lock the slide back.

Somebody here will elucidate on the actual function, but each pistol platform functions a little differently, of course.

Jpyle already elucidated...
