Why are handguns more expensive than shotguns and rifles?

Smaller parts are harder to manufacture and work with.

Maybe you're not looking at the right shotguns and rifles. Really though, as mm13 said there is a lot going on in a small package with handguns. More moving parts than most long guns in a small package is harder to make work right.
