The only time I've had a revolver jam the Lovely Mrs Freefall left it in the car overnight at -30. Oil froze up and wouldn't allow the innards to move. Auto probably could have gotten off a shot, maybe more. Moral of story, degrease, use powdered graphite after Halloween.

Firearms are just like any other engineered piece of machinery, they can malfunction or fail. Revolvers having fewer moving parts, that lends to them being regarded as more reliable.

Or don't live where it gets to -30.

I'm glad so many people feel that way. Wish a few more did.

Show me where it says that any word has to match every definition of the word for that word to be a valid description.

For instance, how many definitions are there for the word chamber or the word barrel?

Arguement is null and void.
I never call a revolver a pistol since my drill Sgt yelled in my face when I called a .38 S&S revolver a "pistol" in basic training. Of course, that was in 1973, but the memory is forever burned in my mind, so no matter what you say Skull he's right...

2 cents. Ref ATF Form 4473, block 29. "Type (pistol, revolver, rifle, shotgun, receiver, frame, etc.)"

Why does the ATF have a difference between revolver and pistol?

"Pistol vs. Revolver"

Depends on who has the pistol and who has the revolver......

Personal preference?
As in,I'm about to spend my hard earned money on one?
I tend to prefer semiautomatic pistols.
I like them because they are faster to reload and have a higher capacity than revolvers.

There are pistols that are just as reliable as revolvers out there, that have gained a solid reputation for reliability in some of the worst conditions imaginable.
The 1911 has such a reputation,as does the Browning-plagiarized TT33.
The 9x18 Makarov is solid.
Same with the Hi-Power design.

Pistols are more complex however, and for beginners or people just needing a gun to have in their home for defense, but who aren't interested in shooting it as much as they really should shoot it,a revolver offers simplicity and safety.

Yeah.

The whole definition controversy-tomato to-mahhh-toe.

Call it whatever you want, just dont mistake it for a magic death ray or a talisman to ward off all evil.

Practice,practice.
