The Michigan county I live in requires an appearance before a gun board. If your situation's anything like mine was, they've got your record in front of them, so don't try any song & dance. If you've done anything untoward in the past, they know about it. Short, to the point answers, don't embellish or improvise. Yes and no are perfectly good answers.
Never argue with an idiot in public. People passing by won't know which one of you is the idiot.

I'm in MI as well. We have to wait for the gun board to meet. It has been a few years but all applicants and public met at once before the board. The board will have all of your information including driving record and CCH (criminal history). If they had any concerns with the information, they called the applicant forward to answer any questions they had. The rest of the applicants were just given their permit or denial letter.
The Gov is thinking of abolishing the gun boards which is long overdue. They are relics from the may-issue days where the board had full discretion on who got permits.
I would think the best way to prepare is to know the law on what disqualifies an applicant, be positive on what your history truly is, and figure out if it would disqualify you and know how to articulate that you do qualify.
I think out of the 50 or so people at my gun board, they asked two people about something in their history and both had their permits issued.

Move to a gun-tolerant state. Face it, even if you got one, would it

really be any good?

When states which take up abuses against the BOR see

all their people and money moving away, they may consider

the light of reason. So hit Cali where it hurts, in the wallet.

That's the only thing which will bring them around.
