What if a .45 caliber semi frangible round hits drywall backed by insulation at an acute angle after passing through my suppressor and a throw pillow? What are the exact chances of a ricochet? Penetration? Blah.

Don't over think this ****. Rent a few guns, get what you shoot best, account for ammo availability and price in your area. As a general rule of thumb, many people increase capacity as they decrease projectile size. YMMV. Strike that, your mileage WILL vary.

Don't worry too damn much about over penetration, but don't ignore that factor either. Learn how to hit what your aiming at. Don't train to miss.

Excellent advise, good marksmanship is really the key.. One well placed round can do the trick

My primary home defense handgun is a full-size XDm in 45acp. And my reason for 45acp might be different from everyone else's.

45acp is just a bit quieter than 9mm because of the round's inherent subsonic speed. The sound in a hallway will still be intense, but the boom of the 45acp is incrementally more tolerable than the crack of the supersonic 9mm.

That's just from reading, mind you. I hope to never find out.

Seems negligible lol I too hope to never know as I have a .45 on my night stand as well..

To play devils advocate, how about over penetration as a plus.. Meaning the ability to shoot through a wall could be a plus could it not? I mean, I feel as though it would be a dumb luck kind of thing as you can't see through or aim through walls..

In my experience its more about shot placement in an urban environment. As well as finding the natural choke points in your house, a little tactical awareness goes a long way for instance from my bedroom door there is a long narrow hallway leading to a living room where the outer wall is brick. So the assailant is naturally squeezed into a tight spot where my shots are less likely to miss and if they do they are stopped on the wall.

I know a guy who lives in a very closed in apartment. Pretty much neighbors on all sides and thin walls. He strictly uses a 10/22 with extended magazine and a .22 Magnum revolver for Home defence. To each their own i guess.

.22s are strange little critters... no telling where they might go when they hit a hard object...

From what I've heard, 22 magnums are even louder than 9mm or 45acp!!

i dont worry about over penetration regardless of where i am. my main concern is stopping the goblin. im not doing a new york city style goon squad 3000+ round free fire into a crowded street.

im using hornady critical defense in my handguns in 9mm and 230grain golden saber(happened to be available at the time) in my 45acp and 95 grain fmj in my 380's and 00buck in the shotgun. the 556 are using ss109. im using 150grain hornady sst in the 308 scar17. in the 45-70 its 405 grain hardcast at 1800fps.

my advice use something effective. overpenetration isnt a factor if your dead cuz your firearm couldnt get it done

A very good point. Plan your defense. You can plan it to utilize choke points, and you can plan it to reduce risk to innocent bystanders. There is no reason to go on the offensive unless there are other people present that you may need to defend. Call the cops and let them sort it out.
