Default Opinions on 9X18 Mak for S.D.

I have a CZ 82 on layaway that I'll pick up in early January. I bought some Fiocchi 95gr. FMJ for practice ammo and will pick up some CorBon and/or Hornady HP's for S.D. purposes.

My plan is to have a reliable and inexpensive pistol to carry around the house. Since I sold my S&W model 37 to fund another project, I wanted something small for the purpose.

As some of you know, I have a couple of .357's and a very good 1911, the CZ is meant for a different niche.

Since it was a Military and Police pistol, I thought it would be a relatively effective self defense pistol. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

So, I'd like some of the more experienced pistolero's here to give me some opinions on the Mak round for S.D. or if it's just for plinking at the range.

I have a Pa-63 FEG that I carry at times. The 82 has a wider grip and larger mag capacity, a good thing. Mine has quite a bite on the hand, but is manageable. Groin and head shots will work best! I bought my Wife a CZ70, not the PPK design, but a mini 1911 design. She starts low and lets the natural climb do its' thing.

Are you willing to divulge your source? Via PM maybe?

A friend of mine has a pistol chambered in 9x18. I've shot it a few times. It seems like a viable self-defense round. We usually shoot at steel plates, and you can tell the difference between different rounds as they knock the plates over. The 9x18 is very similar to the 9x19 (standard pressure, target ammo) when it comes to knocking down steel plates. That doesn't give any indication of penetration or terminal ballistics, but I'd be willing to carry one if I could find a good brand of hollow points for it.

I've got a couple of 82's and I'll just say that I would not want to be on the wrong end of one. And they do carry well.

From what I can gather, Hornady and CorBon make some excellent HP loads in 9X18. I plan on picking some up as my budget permits.

9x18 is not my first choice but a Makarov is in my carry rotation. Gets carried a lot in the summer.
