New Taurus!

So, I traded my Jimenez .380 auto for a Taurus Revolver Model 80 4" barrel 6 shots .38 Special Im not sure if its nickel or stainless steel. What can you use to clean its so make it looking fresh again. Also, what kind of ammo would be best for it and will it take +P??? And if you have any info on the gun about its history or What you think in genaral just let know your thoughts! Thanks

The Model 80 was introduced in 1980, and remained in production until 2001, though it remains in production for South American-only sales today. The Model 80 has fixed sights, small hardwood grips, and a heavy tapering barrel 3 or 4 inches long. The ejector rod is unshrouded. The Model 80 was originally produced only with a blued finish, but later a nickel-plated model was added, as was a stainless steel version (sometimes called the Model 80SS) in 1993.

If it is nickel don't use Hoppes #9 or any ammonia-based solvents on nickel finishes - these have a copper layer underneath, and if the ammonia reaches the copper it will strip off the nickel. It breaks down the layers of copper plating under the nickel and causes the nickel to flake off.

Also if it is an 80 and not an 82 you should not shoot +P ammo through it. The Model 82 is similar to the Model 80 but unlike the Model 80, it has a full-length bull barrel with a prominent top rib and is heavier than the Model 80 because it was strengthened to handle +P ammunition.

How do you tell if its Stainless Steel or Nickel Finish? And what is an all around good way to clean your gun to make it real clean and take of a few blemishes?

You really have to look at it to tell if it is Nickel or stainless. Stop by a local shop and they should be able to tell you if it is nickel or stainless. Typically, a nickel gun will be brighter and have a glossy finish. Try taking a photo of the whole weapon in a macro setting. Take the photo is a brightly lit area without the flash.

P.S. If you use BreakFree CLP it will protect a nickel finish.

Rubbing with good quality toilet paper will polish nickel.
