New Gun
my buddy is in the market for a new gun, he has fired some 1911's and really enjoyed them, he has also fired the XD and enjoyed it, he roughly has $600-$650 in his budget and he needs a good home defense pistol.....if he gets a 1911 instead of the XD is there any in that price range that you guys would recommend?
i told him i would ask you guys and let him know thank you for all your recommendations

For that price range and for home defense, maybe he should be looking at revolvers. Or a shotty. I'm just sayin....

New 1911s in that price range are gonna be slim pickins. Used will open alot of options. I don't have experience with the xd, but have heard nothing but good as far as reliability and accuracy goes. the only complaints I have heard of the xd were to do with the dao trigger. That is just a personal preference. Some people just like a sa trigger better.
In that price range your friend has alot of options other than just a xd and a 1911. I would suggest that he takes some time and really look at some more options.
A gun show or a large gun shop will allow him to look and lay hands on many options.

Springfield Armory (G.I. and Mil Spec) has new models in that price range. Basic yes, but serviceable.

You can pick up a Rock Island Armory 1911 tactical for about $500
i have one and its a great shooter and a good entry level 1911 as well
but dont dismiss the XD right away either i hear from those who own them love them

For $650 you can find a great used 1911. A Kimber, a Colt, etc.... You can also buy the XD for $500 or so and have $100 to get some good ammo, a holster, or mags. I personally own a Kimber and an XD45. They are both outstanding weapons and I've trusted my life with both.

YOU might can,but I can't!
If it's a strictly home defense gun and he is set on a pistol I would go with a good .45acp with a 4inch barrel or longer. XD, M&P, SIG, HK,Ruger, FN,etc.just to name a few.
In that price range he'll do good, but I wouldn't put everything into a low end 1911 for home defense.
