If Big Army ever adopts another .45 ACP weapon, it will most likely be some variant of the FNH FNX 45 Tactical. They have a thing for FN weapons.

That said, the Beretta is a functional handgun that now has years of testing and incremental improvements to the gun and magazines. The military doesn't like changing if there is not considerable reason to do so. When the 1911's were replaced, they were simply beat up and worn out from decades of hard use and the Army wanted a cheaper, higher capacity, more cost effective solution- which is exactly what they purchased.

The military went with 9MM for greater capacity and conformity with the rest of NATO. If the rest of NATO switches to .45 ACP, you'll probably see us follow suit. If not, then hell will freeze over first.

If individual soldiers purchase Glock or S&W M&P handguns, I'm sure the army doesn't care as long as they supply their own spare parts, magazines, holsters, and use NATO ammunition.

I think the Army should stop issuing handguns and publish an "Approved Handguns" list along with a list of spare parts, magazines, and accessories that an individual soldier would have to purchase if he or she elected to carry a handgun as a secondary weapon. If that were to come to pass, you'd see lots of Glocks and S&W M&P's, some SIG, and a smattering of HK. So long as it's 9MM and you have mags and a holster, who cares what flavor you like best?

The money saved on the Soldier Handgun Individual Training program (see there, I just gave it an acronym that best describes soldier marksmanship with a handgun) should go to furnishing 9MM ammunition for the soldiers to receive regular practice with.
