Where I live(NJ) its such a pain to get a handgun so I applied for a handgun permit at the same time. I know a shotgun is a better choice for home defense, hunting, etc and I will get a shotgun but I want to get the handgun now. You only get 30 days once you get the handgun permit to buy the handgun so I need to get it quick.

From what I have read, I see that the glock and 1911 are very popular choices. Is there any other handguns I should consider? I would like to keep the price point around $500ish.

Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks all
Congrats. Glad to see another enthusiast being born.

In terms of picking your gun, I really recommend holding various sizes, types, brands, etc at least. Shoot as many rentals as you can. Pick what feels best in your hand, has the features you want, etc. It has to be your choice of course, but take everyone's advice into consideration as well.

For what its worth, I own a S&W M&P9c for myself, a full size of the same gun for my wife, and yet another that is a birthday present for my mother-in-law. So you can see I like Smith a lot. I also love revolvers, and will buy one as my next purchase.

Really just hold and shoot many as you can.

Good luck. I've given up and won't bother looking anymore.

I reload for that problem. Although reloading components are pretty scarce too.

Idk if I'm too late to hop in here OP but have you considered something in 40 s&w? Ammo availability seems higher than 9mm or 45. Just throwing that out there
