need help in california. question re: gun shops.
ok. so i just got my hsc yesterday (easy test by the way). so now im able to legally purchase firearms in california.

Now my problem is what to get (as CA is strict on their guns).

my main issue right now is $$$. im really looking to spend $200 and under. i had the firearm i wished to purchase but after finding out the local gun store was going to charge me $100 for them to receive it (i was going to be ordering online and shipping to them) and i deem this unacceptable as the gun was $150-ish. so why would i wanna pay nearly the entire cost of the gun to a gun store just for receiving it?

if it makes any difference i was looking at hi-point firearms as they are (at least as i understand it) cheap but reliable guns.

my purpose for a gun is home protection (at any givin time my job requires me to have a lot of money in cash @ home .)

so just a nice handgun will do.

my questions are does every gun store charge $100 just to receive your firearms in california or is this store just milking profits?

i was hoping to simply pay for the firearm to be sent to a dealer and pay them the registration fee without any extra supposed "taxes".

because if i pay $150 for the gun...$100 to the store and $25 for registration its no longer a $200 gun...its closer to $300...

so can someone help me with how to do this or let me know if its just that specific firearms dealer or is it all CA dealers who charge $100 to receive your firearms.

and if someone is interested in taking the time and effort i'd love to see what you think are reliable guns under $200.

I'm sure CA357 will be along shortly but I've seen from his posts that CA is really bad about high FFL fees. Your local gun stores don't carry the Hi-Points?

Finding a decent gun for $200 or less OTD is hard to do anywhere...

$100 is pretty high, but most FFLs charge more in CA than they could get away with elsewhere. I just paid $50 transfer for a sig I bought online, and that's about as low as it gets in my area, $25 for background check is pretty much universal. As far as gun choice, if I were you I would save up and look to spend $500-600 if you want a decent weapon.

It varies even in New Mexico, some shops in Albuquerque will charge $50.00 to $125.00, I try to stay local to keep the money local.

I would look at a good used shotgun for near that price than going with a Hi-Point for home defense. That is coming from a Hi-Point owner. Are they pretty reliable, yes. Are they big and bulky, heck yes. The biggest problem with them is the cheap mags with weak springs and there are not aftermarket mags for them.

You should be able to find a good used Mossberg 500 or Maverick 88 for around $200.

As far as the fees and hoops in Kalifornia, well, it is what it is.

The $25. fee is standard. What the dealer charges for receiving the firearm is up to them. Here in Sacramento there's an FFL I use that charges $65. for the transfer and registration fees.

$100. is kind of high, but unfortunately not unusual. Look around for another FFL if you can find one and compare fees.

$200. for a pistol in CA is tough. I suggest that you take a look at used pistols at your local gun shops. CZ82's are available for right around your price and the 9x18 Makarov round is a good one. It seems to me that you'll find something adequate for between $200.-$300. Just shop around.

BTW, a new Bersa Thunder .380 can be had in CA for right around $200. or so. Although, .380 may be a bit small of a caliber.

Look at used handguns. If you don't know much about them, see if you can bring along a knowledgeable friend to help you out.

You're welcome to PM me if you have any questions. If you're in the Sacramento area, I'll be glad to personally help you find your gun and give you a few pointers along the way.

thanks for all the replies guys.

i was thinking $100 was a bit high too. i understand the $25 as being the strandard. that store just irritates me as they never told me about the $100 fee...when i first called them (to see if they give the hsc test) i asked about all related fees to have a gun shipped and they said $25 for the registration/background check etc and thats it...then once i took the test they said it would be $100 extra per shipped gun.

that store is pretty much out of my price range. its not a large store and they seem to carry more high-end handguns than anything else...and i mean the average cost is $500 and up for a USED handgun...they do not carry hi-points either.

im in the bay area of california by the way.

ive also tried looking into pawn shops but none are near me...and i'd hate to take a 40 min drive to leave unhappy.

i will have to look into these weapons online.

If you want to come up to Sacramento, I'll be glad to help you out.

so i went looking around on auction arms and found a bunch in my price range...

can someone with more experience than i take a look at some of these and give their opinions? is there a steal right under my nose that im not aware of? and once i do select a handgun i'd like to purchase what are the next steps? how do i arrange this between an online company (like auction arms) and a FFL?
