The police can revoke your license(s), but they need to show in court that you are not suitable to own firearms because of your lifestyle (problems with alcohol etc.) and/or mental health. They can't just march in your home and take them.

The permit system we have is need based, so you have to tell in the application what you're going to use the gun for. Accepted uses are e.g. hunting, sport shooting (has to be a sport with national level competitions, so "plinking" won't do) and collecting. Those are the most common "needs" that you can get a gun for, there are others too but they're fairly rare (work use, for bodyguards etc.). Also you have to fill out an application for every gun you want to buy. The very first permit you apply for and the handgun permits are usually a bit trickier to get, but when you know what the law says and the hoops you have to jump through you can get most guns here that you guys have in the US. It's a bit complex system and we have our fair share of simply stupid gun laws but I won't bore you with any more details
Sounds similar to the firearms laws in the UK.
