First choice is a S&W 627 - 8 rounds of 357. Magnum? Yes please. Everyone has already talked about the "why" for the caliber. Wheelgun because off its dependability and versatility and ruggedness and it doesn't use a magazine. Etc etc etc

Second choice would be a Kel-Tec PMR-30. 31 rounds of .22 WMR would be pretty handy for critter hunting. I was gong to go with a revolver, but the highest capacity I could find in .22LR is 12 and its a SAO by US Firearms and only 9 rounds in .22 WMR. While I think SAO revolvers have a place and would be a lot of fun, in a situation described by the OP I would opt for something which is easier to fire (DA or striker fired). In my opinion, hard to argue with 31 rounds in a gun. Plus, its not like .22 Magnum is difficult to get anyway (well, right now everything is...).

I like the way you think. Capacity is king, most people think "ive just been shot" assuming they survive not "i was only shot by a .22"
On these line I would choose a FN 5.7, hi capacity 20+1 or 30+1 a little more power than a 22. Ammo is hard to find but I have a few hundred on hand. It it lighter fully loaded with 31 rounds than my 1911 is empty.

S&W .38/.357, without any doubt, mine is a K-frame, model 19-3. The calibers are very versatile, from shooting shotshells to heavy mag. rounds. The platform has been proven on every continent and in every environment. In the western hemisphere it is widely used and available, so parts and ammo are readily available. It is comfortable to carry and handles like a dream.

There is really NO downside to choosing a .38/.357 revolver.

Ok I'll play.

I agree with a revolver that shoots more that one caliber. Where I differ is, I want the S&W Governor. It shoots .45colt, 410, and 45acp. That's three rather common calibers.

If I pick an auto it's a S&W M&P9. Much more reliable than my Glock, as accurate as my friends 92fs, and it's very comfortable.

I'll never argue the reliability of a GLOCK, but what is it that makes you say it's the most versatile?

In a more SHTF specific situation, that very well might be my first choice.
