Generally speaking, you can't go wrong with any gun made by one of the major manufacturers. Avoid the small, cheap "Saturday night specials." Those tend to be very unreliable.
Any semi-automatic .22 caliber can be very twitchy about what kinds of ammo they like. It's kind of wierd, but the same kind of ammo will not work well in two different guns, even if they are the same kind of gun.
You can't hardly go wrong with a well made revolver. They will shoot just about anything you can stuff into the chambers.
Check out pawn shops in your area. You can sometimes find some pretty good guns there, for less money. Sometimes.
