Look for police trade-ins. Maybe call your local department, ask where they deal locally. Unfortunately, the days of traded police revolvers seem to be over, mostly just see autos now.

That sounds pretty sweet. It just sucks that to find a good gunshop I'm going to have to travel quite a ways.

But if I were to buy a gun from someone it'd be alright as long as the serial numbers were in tact and it wasn't used in a crime?

Depends on your state's laws. Some states require extra steps for private party sales, such as permits & other paperwork. Also, you cannot buy a handgun from a private party in another state nor from an out of state resident that comes to you as both these situations violate federal law. Check your local laws carefully and if a deal looks shady or makes you nervous - walk away...
