As others have already said, try before you buy in order to make sure you get a gun that's comfortable for you to shoot.

That said, my wife has a full size M&P 40 and we both like the gun. The adjustable grips were a big plus for her, but I also find it to be a good fit for my hands. I wouldn't get to hung up on choice of caliber - with the right round all the choices are reasonable for self defense. I would say that lately it seems that .40 is a little more available than 9mm, but that's probably not going to stay that way forever.

The M&P 45 is 4.25" and is light to carry. The 9mm compact is 3.5". I carry the 45 most of the time but when wearing a tee and shorts the 9mm is a better choice. If Dad will buy you a Kimber if you quit smoking, first your Dad is a good guy and wants to give you the best. Second give up the cigs as they will take your life and get the Kimber it might save your life !

If your Dad isn't a member you should get him to sign up, sounds like a guy we would enjoy here.

So i did go to the range last night got off about 50 round of 9mm, 25 of glock 357 sig and about 25 of my buddys 357 mag revolver
I liked you 9mm after i got use to it. I was hoping they would have had a s&w m&p 9mm but they didnt

So i was at the gun shop today and they just happin to have on sale this week S&W M&P 9mm
so i said f-it and bought one about to go to the range and shoot

i do like it, got kicked out of the range after 2 hrs, "they were closing"
so we are going to go back tomr. i was reading one problem with the S&W M&P when ejecting shells flight right back at your head and its true, so im going to read some more about
