Default Looking for a hand gun that shoots affordable small caliber ammo

I am researching hand guns for my lady and am looking for something with lower recoil with ammo that won't break the bank. A .22 is too small. She has fired my .22 and .45 1911 and feels like the .45 is too big obviously. I am thinking 380 but don't know much about them as far as recoil goes.
I priced the ammo and it's 25-30 a box and was hoping for something that had a more affordable round but will still get the job done.

Just got my wife a springfield range officer in 9mm. She loves it. The xdm is another soft shooting 9mm. Beretta 92fs/m9 is prolly the best of the lot in terms of shootability and ease of use.

9mm or .38 Special, IMO.

Out of a wheel gun with a little weight, .38 is very tame. It is also about $5-6 more per box of 50 than 9mm in my area.

Both are good calibers. In my estimation it comes down to her choice between a semi-auto or wheel gun. Although I suppose there is such thing as a 9mm wheel gun nowadays.

S&W is also introducing the 986 this year. Which is an L frame 9mm. 7 shot I believe? Don't quote me on that.

Funny, my nephew had a Taurus snubbie in .380acp not long ago; I don't think it was expensive. It did require a "moon clip" type thing that looked like it would make for speedy reloads. http://www.taurususa.com/product-details.cfm?id=856&category=Revolver&toggle=&bread crumbseries= Taurus also has a pair of 9mm revolvers in their small frame section.

I love a Bersa Thunder .380 myself, and my sister loves the one in her purse. They are in the low $300 range and have nice controls and a flat nickel finish that I like a lot. The recoil doesn't seem like much to me or to my sister. My Bersa Thunder 9UCP is a little snappier and not as good-looking, but it uses the 9x19mm instead of the less powerful 9x18/.380acp.

Regarding the Ammo cost, I'm not sure how much I would worry about the difference between the prices of common calibers like .380acp, 9mm, .38spcl. I doubt this will turn into her regular at the range; larger firearms are more fun for that (GP-100, CZ-75b, 92FS, XD, etc.).

Thanks guys! I think the Bersa 9 may be up her ally. We handled a few pistols in 380 about the size of the Bersa 380 and she said it felt a little small in her hand. How would the recoil be in that smaller 9mm?

As others suggest 9MM is so readily available it has become quite inexpensive.

Find a nice used semi-auto like a Ruger and go for it.

9MM - box 50 $11.49 + shipping. Or try a local gun show. They often can match prices like this.

I can tell a difference when I shoot the Bersa9 and then my CZ-75b, for certain. The little Bersa isn't annoying or painful to shoot to me, but I can tell it isn't the heavy CZ.

I will say, Bersa is PROUD of their magazines, like $45.

Is she wanting a carry gun or just a range gun? If just a range gun, I'd try to get her into something a little larger and heavier to help reduce the recoil to nothing for hours of plinking fun.
