I'm in the market for my first auto loader handgun. I was wanting a .40 but I'm not a big fan of the whole striker fire system of Glock and Springfield XD. I really liked the Ruger P series but all that is available in that is the 9 and 45. Any suggestions for a good auto loader that is double single action? I just can't shoot the strikers as well as a p95. Also this isn't really meant for a carry piece so I'm not at all concerned with size, if anything I want something with a longer barrel as I may carry it hunting and in WI we have to have a 5" barrel.

do you have anything against single action?? cuz if your intention is semi-auto handgun hunting you might consider a 1911 with a 460rowland conversion.

but cz makes the cz97bd da/sa 10 shot 45acp. its basically a large cz75.

there is also the superb sig P220 in 45acp.

also the fnp 45 i dont have any first hand experience other than handling them in stores but they seem to be popular FNP-45, DA/SA, Matte Black Stainless

Bud's has the poly Sig 2022's for $399 right now. That or the CZ P-07 might be decent polymer options.

If you want a metal gun look at Sig (p226, p229) or CZ (75, 85, P-06). You can also get good deals on police trade-ins from Beretta (92 models) and S&W (4-digit series).

I wouldn't say I'm against a 1911, I just haven't had the opportunity to shoot one yet. I prefer a single action because they are easier for me to shoot accurately, that's why I was thinking something like the P95 or the Sigs. They have that Sig 2022 at a local shop here, I looked at it last week but I haven't shot one, again they have a short barrel so I don't know if that's what I want. My buddy has a Glock 22 that he bought a aftermarket 5" barrel for so he can use it hunting, but I wasn't too comfortable with the Glock trigger. The whole problem seems to be I can't find the action I want with the longer barrel unless I go 1911 and then I'm kinda stuck with a 45. Maybe I will just buy a .357 revolver and not worry about the longer barrel on the auto?

Oh, and I forgot to mention, I'm left handed so that kinda limits the choices too, for some reason most of these companies must think left handers don't shoot pistols.

Look into FNP/FNX 40's. They seem to have a lot of what you're looking for...hammer, double/single, ambi controls.

That FN 40 with a 5.3" barrel looks interesting but in the picture it sure doesn't look like that long of a barrel. Too bad there probably isn't anyone around here who actually owns one I could try out.
