For me, the fact that it is a close-up tool makes the laser more justified. Unless one specifically trains point-and-shoot, you might be surprised how far off target one can be even at 3-5 yard distances. The laser aids me in getting on target more quickly and in situations where achieving a proper stance/sight picture is not feasible.
I watched Rob Letham demonstrate how to use a laser for training w 1911 - draw to index & clean trigger release. (YouTube). Cheap way to practice in your own home for those who don't get "free & unlimited" ammo.
The TV Show "Guns & Gear" also gave a demo on the ability to shoot from cover while only exposing your shooting arm & how you can hit from surprising distance w laser. Host hit from 25 yds w LCP. To be honest, host is a good shot and may have been able to hit w/o laser.
